About Tim


Timothy McDevitt is a versatile performer with a career spanning the United States and abroad. His baritone voice has been featured at prominent venues throughout Europe including the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Oper der Stadt Köln, and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence; in Tokyo with the NHK Symphony; and in the United States with The Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, Ballet, and Philharmonic; the Chicago, Cincinnati, Virginia, Reading, Albany, Winston Salem, National, and New World Symphonies, the Philadelphia Orchestra, American Classical Orchestra,and in all three Halls at Carnegie Hall. His theatre credits include productions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and National Sawdust, regionally at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Baltimore Center Stage, and six productions with NY City Center Encores. On television, he can be seen on season two of the AppleTV series "Dickinson" and on PBS for both Live from Lincoln Center and Great Performances. His solo cabaret Erwartung//Expectation has been produced by The Metropolitan Opera Club, Park Avenue Armory Avant-Garde, The Century Association, and Soho House; and the accompanying short film received screenings at the Long Beach Opera and Opera Philadelphia film festivals. Off the stage, Timothy is a dedicated vocal coach with studios in New York and Los Angeles, and is on the Vocal Arts Faculty at the Manhattan School of Music and Bard College.

He is a graduate of The Juilliard School.

In the 2024-25 season Timothy returns to New York City Center as Benjamin Gugenheim in TITANIC, revives the role of Maximillian in Candide with the Northern Lights Music Festival, joins the American Classical Orchestra as baritone soloist in Bach’s St John Passion at Alice Tully Hall, portrays the title role in Dear Edvard at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, and is again on the roster of The Metropolitan Opera covering in John Adams’ new adaptation of Antony & Cleopatra.

In the 2023-24 season, Timothy opened the Virginia Arts Festival in Sweeney Todd with the Virginia Symphony, revived the role of Edvard Munch in Dear Edvard at MASSMoca, headlined two pops concerts with the Reading Symphony Orchestra and returned to The Metropolitan Opera for A Celebration of Stephen Schwartz.

The 2022-23 season saw Timothy join the roster of The Metropolitan Opera covering in the new production of Terrence Blanchard’s Champion. Also that season, William in The Fall of the House of Usher at OrpheusPDX, Maximilian in Candide with the Cincinnati Symphony, Porter’s Gay Paree for the opening of The Ned Nomad, concerts with the Winston Salem Symphony, and performances of his original cabaret Erwartung // {Expectation} for The Metropolitan Opera Club, Ludlow House, The Century Association, and The Park Avenue Armory Avant-Garde. The accompanying short film was also screened at the Long Beach Opera and Opera Philadelphia film festivals.

During the Covid19 years, Tim spent his time teaching on Zoom, recording audio files in his bedroom, and flipped a house in his hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania. He also gained fifteen pounds and drank a lot of martinis.

The 2019-20 season included his debut in Germany as Harry Easter in Street Scene at Oper Köln, Maximillian in Candide with the Philadelphia Orchestra alongside actors Bradley Cooper & Carrie Mulligan, Call Me Madam with NY City Center Encores, Zelenka’s Missa Omnium Sanctorum with the American Classical Orchestra, and a return to the Ravinia Festival for the revival of Bernstein’s Mass with the Chicago Symphony, later broadcast on PBS Great Performances. He was also seen in season two, episode six of Dickinson on AppleTV+

On the opera stage he has starred in Les Mamelles de Tirésias at both the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, L’Isola Disabitata at Alice Tully Hall, Zaide with the New World Symphony, La Fanciulla del West with the New York City Opera, and Les Enfants Terribles with the North Carolina Opera. His numerous theatre and concert credits include the Emmy Award winning Carousel for Live from Lincoln Center and the New York Philharmonic, Guys and Dolls at Carnegie Hall, West Side Story with the NHK Symphony in Tokyo as well as the Philadelphia Orchestra, South Pacific at Charlottesville Opera, The Secret Garden at Baltimore Center Stage & Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Dreyfus Affair at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Thou Swell with the NY City Ballet, Bernstein’s Mass with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and several appearances with NY City Center Encores; Brigadoon, Me & My Girl, The New Yorkers, Call me Madam, and Lady be Good. Recordings include Mass on the Deutsche Grammophon label, Brigadoon and Lady be Good with Ghostlight Records, and Roberta on New World Records.

Early in his career, Timothy was recognized as a New York District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Competition, the Lys Symonette Prize Winner of the Lotte Lenya Competition, and a finalist in the Competition dell’Opera at the Bolshoi Opera in Moscow.

As a competition judge and coach, Timothy was most recently on the Miss America Organization panel crowning Miss New York 2023, Amelia Collins and is on the team of Miss New York 2024, Abigail Quammen, as she prepares for Miss America.

Timothy holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Juilliard. He is on the Vocal Arts faculty at Manhattan School of Music, Bard College, and teaches privately in New York and Los Angeles.
